ISAR Feature Aided Tracking

When tracking ground targets from an airborne radar, purely kinematic trackers are susceptible to association errors in even moderate traffic and also in areas with building or terrain obscuration. High range-resolution (HRR) tracking is highly sensitive to target orientation and therefore requires continuous collection, which degrades the sensor area coverage rate.

EMSI’s innovation was to realize that one could make excellent ISAR images of vehicles in turns. We demonstrated that ISAR features persist over 50 degrees in aspect.

EMSI integrated our ISAR feature aided tracking into an MHT tracker and demonstrated a substantial track metric improvement over a purely kinematic tracker.
